Hallett Cove School Purpose Statement and Values

After much consultation across the Hallett Cove Community, it is my privilege to start my update this month by introducing our new Purpose Statement and Values.

You can watch a short introduction from myself, Student Captains and Governing Council Chairperson, Jay Golley, here.

Our Purpose Statement

Empowering our community to thrive.

The Hallett Cove School Purpose Statement encapsulates our commitment to fostering an environment where every individual can flourish.

This powerful statement is not just a collection of words but a culmination of invaluable insights and contributions from every corner of our community. We have engaged with our dedicated staff, our inspiring students from R-12, and the supportive families who form the backbone of our school. Together, we have created a shared vision that reflects our collective aspirations and dreams.

Our Values

The Hallett Cove School school values—Respect, Resilience, and Integrity—serve as the pillars that support our purpose.

Respect is about honouring each individual’s unique qualities and fostering a culture of understanding and empathy.

Resilience embodies our commitment to nurturing a spirit of perseverance, encouraging our students to overcome challenges and learn from them.

Integrity is the foundation upon which we build trust and transparency, ensuring that our actions align with our words.

These values are not just ideals, they are lived experiences within our school community.

They guide our interactions, influence our decisions, and shape our character. They remind us that our strength lies in our unity and our ability to support one another through every challenge and triumph.

Be a Hero for HeartKids

1 in 100 in Australia have Congenital Heart Disease (CoHD), that’s one baby born every three hours, every day!

HeartKids exists to give every child, teenager and adult in Austalia living with CoHD a fighting chance to live a long and healthy life.

On Friday 14 June our Junior School students were replaced by superheroes for Be a Hero for HeartKids Day!

Our little heroes each brought a gold coin donation to be sent to HeartKids that directly contributed to their support programs for families living with Congenital Heart Disease and to important research and actions programs to fight CoHD.

What a bunch of heroes!

Watch our heros in action here.

Cove Connect Morning Tea

All term our Cove Connect students have hosted their Coffee n Chat morning tea every Thursday at recess.

It’s a lovely opportunity for teachers to catch up with ex-students and those students to treat the teachers to a freshly made coffee or hot chocolate. What a treat!

Miss Julie, our Cove Connect Youth Worker, said “to see their smiles once everyone has left is very heartfelt and makes us so proud”

R U OK? Day Preparation

R U OK? Day is an annual event supported at Hallett Cove School. This year R U OK? Day will be held on Thursday 12 September.

R U OK? encourages all of us to notice the signs of mental health struggle in friends, family, and colleagues. Staff and students come together to recognise this cause and proudly wear yellow to support the cause.

One of our Year 4 students, Imara, had a great idea for something new to make and sell as a part of our fund raising on the day.

Imara shared her idea with a group of class mates and  started a lunchtime club to fine tune their stress toy designs and are getting ready for the fun of mass production. They can’t wait to be able to share their finished products with everyone!

Year 12 Café

At the end of last term Ms Fletchers Year 12 Food and Hospitality students ran a very successful pop-up café for very lucky school staff as part of a major group assessment.

The students spent time learning the craft of coffee and curating a special menu suitable for takeaway in preparation for the event and boy did they deliver!

They were put to the test with all hot food and drinks made to order but service and standards were outstanding! I dare say we have some budding future café connoisseurs in our midst!

NAIDOC Week

In the final week of Term 2, Hallett Cove School recognised NAIDOC Week.

NAIDOC Week, which was nationally celebrated in the first week of the school holidays, recognises and the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and is an opportunity for all Australians to celebrate the oldest, continuous living culture on earth.

With the support of the Aboriginal Education team and First Nations students, rock painting sessions were held every lunchtime, where students from across the school could attend and design their own rocks to take home.

*This National NAIDOC Week activity was funded by the National Indigenous Australians Agency

100 Days of School

It feels like yesterday our youngest students stepped into the classroom with plenty of excitement and a little bit of nerves, but look at them now—100 days smarter, stronger, and braver!

In Week 1 we celebrated all the amazing things they have accomplished, from mastering new skills to making new friends. Here’s to every challenge faced, every lesson learned, and every milestone achieved!

Well done Receptions! Keep on growing!

First Week of School

While our January Receptions were celebrating their firt 100 days, our July receptions celebrated their very first day of school with a story from our Principal Mr Hall and a very special present.

As has become tradition now, our little ones were presented with their very own library bags to fill with books on their library visits. In the bags was a book from Mr Hall’s favourite author Dr Seuss to get them started on their reading journey and everyone was very excited!

Careers Expo

While our yougest students are just starting their school days journey, our High School students were thinking about what happens at the end of theirs by exploring our HCS Careers Expo.

We were joined be over 20 universities, training organisations, apprenticeship/work providers, emergency services and even the army to answer every question our students had about possible career pathways.

It was fantastic to see so many students already thinking about what their futures hold and we are beyond proud that we get to prepare them for the journey!

High School Maths Problem of the Week

This term we introduced a Maths Problem of the Week in our high school, designed to engage and challenge students in mathematics. Students are presented with a problem in the morning notices and the first person to present the correct solution, including their reasoning, to Mrs Davis receives a prize.

Congratulations to our recent winners, Charlie Wade, Zach Kennedy and Michael Anderson, who have demonstrated their successful problem-solving abilities.

We look forward to seeing more students participate in these weekly challenges. Who will be our next maths victor? Stay tuned and keep solving!

Super Netball Visit

Last week HCS was super lucky to be visited by some super special guests from the Adelaide Thunderbirds!

Ahead of their big game to fight for the trophy for the second year running, they paid our Junior School a visit to dish out some important training tips and to answer the questions of the netballers of tomorrow!

Team spirit was super high and the good vibes obviously made it to them on the day as they lifted the trophy once again!

Watch a video of the action here.

Radio

Studio One is LIVE on Hallett Cove School Radio!

Our Year 5 and 6 classes will be streaming across the school every Friday at 2:30 to fill us in on the news around school!

Watch the video here.

Junior School Mystery

In Week 2, a select group of Junior School students of all ages received a mystery envelope inviting them the a secret morning tea.

If students dared to attend, they were met with a series of puzzles spelling out a secret message They worked in teams to solve the word searches, picture puzzles and anagrams and eventually worked out the mystery!

The mystery was…..that all students in attendance were being congratulated on their outstanding attendance in Semester 1! The majority of students had only missed one day of school in the whole of Semester 1 with 4 students with a prefect score!!

Congratulations on your hard work and commitment students! You deserve to be celebrated!!

Staff vs Students

Last week was our second Staff vs Students for the year and this time we were testing brain power in the inaugural Cove Quiz!

Questions ranged from pop culture to general knowledge and both teams put up a good fight! We’re ashamed to say the student teams definitely had the upper edge in the pop culture round but ultimately, the staff team took home the gold! (Metaphorically of course).

It’s now 2-0 to the staff this year but there’s still plenty of time for the students bring it back before December!

High Achievers

Following the release of Semester 1 Student Achievement Summaries (reports), our high achieving students across the school have been recognised formally at various assemblies. During this time, we also recognised high levels of attendance and those who demonstrated perseverance too.

Well done to our students who were recognised for their efforts, but to all of our students on their learning from Semester 1.

Sticks and Stones Incursion

This week our middle school students had the opportunity to see Brainstorm Productions presenting their student wellbeing live theatre performance ‘Sticks & Stones’.

This production explores different forms of bullying and aggression and encourages respect, assertiveness and conflict resolution at school, at home and online.

The incredibly engaging show of only two energetic performers explored the influence of peers, family, social media, YouTube and Video games on attitudes and behaviours. They cleverly demonstrated the role of the flight or fight response and how this energy can be channelled inter positive pursuits.

It provided our students with practical strategies for emotional regulation, assertiveness, conflict resolution, resilience, help-seeking and breaking the cycle of violence.

Year 12 Monarto Zoo Excursion

Last week our Year 12 Marine and Environmental Studies class headed to Monarto Zoo to explore the animal kingdoms.

Everyone loved the giraffes and the Tasmanian devils but the highlights were the three newest members to the zoo: a five week old giraffe, a baby chimpanzee and a teeny tiny baby meerkat, the first born at the zoo in over 6 years!

Lot 14 Excursion

Last Thursday eight students from Years 9 and 10 participated in an exciting tour of Lot Fourteen. During our two-hour visit, the students explored the Australian Institute of Machine Learning, the Australian Space Discovery Centre, and the Optus Cyber Security division.

Teresa, the founder and CEO of STEM Fast Track, delivered an inspiring talk on the importance of honing people skills and developing other essential 21st-century skills. Her key message was to explore various interests because you never know what you might enjoy!

Next, we visited the Optus Cyber Security division, where the students learned about the company’s goals and core pillars. They also had the opportunity to engage in activities that simulated tackling cyber problems, providing a hands-on experience.

Our subsequent stop was the Australian Space Discovery Centre, where we discovered the diverse array of jobs involved in sending astronauts to space. We observed the activities in the Mission Control Centre and participated in various activities and displays to deepen our understanding of space exploration.

The final stop on our tour was the Australian Institute of Machine Learning, where we learned about coding robots. The institute specialises in research and development in artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, computer vision, and deep learning. We were introduced to a robotic dog being programmed to visually differentiate between objects, such as distinguishing between a blue ball and a red ball.

The two-hour visit was packed with information, and the students left with a new perspective on the wide range of career opportunities available in these cutting-edge fields.

International

At the start of the term, we welcomed 40 new international students from countries all over the world including Austria, Germany, Japan, Belgium, Brazil, Switzerland, Italy, Czechia, China and Chile. We also welcomed another 14 students from South Korea making a total of 70 students onsite from Year 1 to Year 12.

Excursions have started with a visit to Parliament House, the city centre, SA Uni, Victor Harbour and Hahndorf. In the coming week all international students will be attending a state-wide welcome event where they will see more Australian animals, hear a didgeridoo and meet many other international high school students across the state.

Thank you once again to all our homestay families, of which there are a lot of you this term, and to the international team of teachers and buddies who have helped make the first few weeks of this term a memorable and seamless experience for all the new and existing students.

HCS Sport

Open Boys Basketball

The HCS open boys basketball team put up a valent effort in their competition at the end of Term 2.

The team, coached by Year 12 student Xavier Hayden, had limited experience together but had tonnes of effort to give in their 2 games.

It was evident that the boys loved every moment of the experience and improved significantly on the day.

It was great to see the team getting along, encouraging each other and having a few laughs. Well done Hallett Cove School open boys team!

Volleyball Round Robin

Last term Hallett Cove School hosted Concordia College, Sacred Heart College and Adelaide High in the Round Robin volleyball competition.

Matches were played all day with some great attacking skills, serve runs and scrambling to keep the ball alive.

The boys team lost two close matches against Concordia and Adelaide but showed good improvement throughout the day, with blocking pressure a highlight.

The girls team won both of their matches against Concordia and Sacred Heart, with all players contributing and demonstrating good attacking volleyball through spiking and aggressive serving!

7/8 Netball

In Week 7 last term, a team of ten Year 7 and 8 girls competed in Round 1 of the Statewide Netball Competition at Wirreanda Secondary School.

The girls had a strong start, beating St. George College by a convincing 6 goals!

The second game of the day saw the girls take on Willunga High School in some very wet and wild conditions. Unfortunately, the game was called off in the last five minutes due to the weather, resulting in a loss.

Despite the girls best efforts, the final game of the day against Wirreanda Secondary School also ended in a loss.

Nevertheless, the girls demonstrated excellent teamwork, positivity, and sportsmanship throughout the competition.

9/10 Soccer

In Week 10, Hallett Cove School sent an enthusiastic squad to participate in Round #1 of the Year 9/10 Statewide Knockout Soccer competition held at Seaford Rangers FC.

The boys were highly motivated and focussed for their first game against Seaview, demonstrating an excellent team performance; working hard and supporting each other positively. Everyone played their role superbly, including those coming from the bench. Through their hard work, they took care of Seaview with a final score of 6:1 to HCS.

Goal scorers:
Gethin E – 2
Harrisson P-C – 2
Pakin R – 1
Sergio H – 1

After that strong performance and a short break, they played Seaford. Again, the boys performed very well, dominating possession, defending well and showing creativity when attacking. Ethan (GK) and the team managed to keep a clean slate and secured a 4:0 victory against the hosts.

Goal scorers:
Eli K – 1
Gethin E – 1
Josh V – 1
Jaime B – 1

The team represented Hallett Cove School and the Soccer Program in the best possible fashion with excellent sportsmanship and behaviour and displayed a highly proficient brand of football in both games. Well done to all that participated in a great day! We are looking forward to Round #2 in the first half of Term 3.

11/12 Netball

In Week 10, 8 Year 11/12 girls (some who had never played netball before) competed in the statewide schools netball competition.

Unfortunately, we were unable to come away with a win in any of our games. Despite facing some very strong sides in Emmaus, Reynella and ASMS, the girls gave it their all, and were still smiling at the end.

Highlights were reaching double digits in our final game, goal-stopping intercepts resulting in goals for us and lots of encouragement on and off the court.

Vs Emmaus 7-50
Vs Reynella East 6-60
Vs ASMS 15-40

Year 7 Volleyball

Our year 7 volleyball team were given the opportunity to travel to Brighton and play a friendly match against the local school, Brighton Secondary School at the end of last term.

This was a great opportunity for the students to work on their skills. Well done to all involved.

7-12 Table Tennis Tournament

In Week 10, some of our students participated in the year 7-12 table tennis tournament which resulted in many close games.

Jed performed amazingly, taking out the title for the third year in a row. Well done Jed.

7/8 basketball finals

The Hallett Cove boys made it through to the finals of the Statewide competition defeating Seaford and Aldinga Payinthi schools. Finals were played at the State Basketball Centre on Wednesday 27 June 2024.

The team played fast-paced aggressive games all day that ended up being too much for their competition. Even though they were smaller and less athletic than many of their opponents the team outplayed and out hustled their opponents. Many of the games were decided by only a few points and the extra effort on displayed by the team put us just over the line.

The team defeated schools in their pool to move on to the Semi Final and then the Grand Final.

Well done Hallett Cove 7/8 boys. Special mention to Zac V and Harry Q who lead the team on and off the court all day.

Congratulations to our Year 7/8 Boys Statewide Basketball Team on winning their division.

9/10 Basketball

In Week 1, HCS entered a Year 9/10 Boys Basketball team into the School Sport SA Day Carnival held at Morphett Vale Stadium.

The team played to an excellent level of basketball throughout the day and after winning three games and drawing one in our pool, the boys played in the grand final and came out on top!

The boys all played hard and stayed composed to the very end, taking home the championship plaque. The team showed great sportsmanship, resilience and a positive attitude that made the day an excellent success for Hallett Cove Basketball.

Well done boys!!

Ice Hockey Superstars!

HCS Year 7 students Ryder and Riley have travelled to NSW in the school holidays to represent SA in a national ice hockey championship.

We are so proud of you boys to be representing our state!

Soccer State Team Representative

On behalf of Hallett Cove School and the Soccer Program, we would like to congratulate Jake B on his State Team selection for the U/16 Boys.

Jake and the team headed to Wollongong in the school holidays to compete at the Nationals against the best players from each state/territory.

Playing in the midfield, Jake is incredibly excited to participate in this competition and hopeful that it will lead to more opportunities in the future!

SANFLW Superstar!

We must also say a huge congratulations to our very own Ms Fletcher on her 50th game for Sturt Football Club in the SANFLW!

Well done Ms Fletcher on your amazing achievement!

Fruit, Veg and Bread

Hallett Cove School will be continuing with Fruit, Veg and Bread next year. We are fortunate to receive donations of fruit, vegetables and bread from local businesses and charities.

Each even week of term, we will have fruit and vegetables available on Monday afternoons, and every Thursday we have bread available outside the Early Years for families to collect.

Phone Policy and Yondr Pouches

Thank you to all of our students and families for their support with implementing the South Australian Government ban on mobile phones in schools in 2023.

The use of Yondr pouches at Hallett Cove School made an immediate impact on phone use and students are happily engaging in learning, during class and at break times.

Your ongoing support with encouraging your child to follow our phone policy is appreciated.

Hallett Cove School aims to take advantage of the reach and instantaneous nature of social media to communicate with our families.

Please email info@hcs.sa.edu.au if you are interested in joining P&F and the school will put you in contact with our P&F representative and our Volunteer Coordinator.

Kiss and Drop Areas

When dropping off/picking up your child(ren), please remember that the middle lane (Gledsdale Road Kiss and Drop) and right lane (Sanderson Road Kiss and Drop) should not be used as a waiting/parking lane.
