Hair and Beauty Try-a-Trade

In Week 3 some of our Hair and Beauty students were introduced to the world of the beauty industry at TAFE SA Adelaide campus where they heard about the opportunities available and pathways into the industry.

They got to use the salon skills they have learnt this semester and got try some new ones!

The Coolest Kid on the Block

Also in Week 3, Jack was on top of the world as he pulled through the fog and up to the school in a very sleek McLaren Artura.

Jack won the once-in-a-lifetime ride to school from SAFM and was accompanied by their Black Thunder team. His class greeted him in the car park to plenty of cheers and open mouths!

The over half a million dollar car certainly turned plenty of heads and what a memory for Jack!

Year 5 Maritime Museum Visit

Our Year 5’s also had a fantastic time in Week 3 at the SA Maritime Museum!

Our students learned about the early encounters between Aboriginal Australians and various traders and explorers, discovered what life was like on board for travellers coming to Australia in the 1840s, and even explored a Ketch. They were curious, asked insightful questions, and shared their knowledge with enthusiasm.

A big thank you to all the volunteers for helping out on the day and making this experience so memorable!

Year 10/11 Ski Trip

In Week 4, a group of our Year 10 and 11’s headed to the snow for the annual ski trip.

Students had a great time learning new skills on both ski’s and snowboards and had amazing blue skies all week with ideal conditions. With many memories made and new friendships formed between Hallett Cove School and Modbury High School, as the bus journeyed back to Adelaide, the students were filled with a sense of accomplishment and joy.

The 2024 Snow Trip has once again been a fantastic adventure, blending thrilling activities with meaningful connections and creating lasting memories for everyone involved.

Art Exhibition

Week 4 also saw us host our SALA Art Exhibition and Competition which attracted nearly 200 families over the evening to walk though our display.

We had 185 artworks on show in static displays and walkthrough installations and families loved how professional the exhibition was setup and seeing the collaboration across the year levels. Well done to our creative students!

Congratulations to our Art competition winners:

Thank you to all the teachers and staff who helped curate the exhibition and worked with students to create their pieces. See all the pieces here in our virtual art gallery.

Book Week Parade 2024

A huge thank you to all the families who helped make our Book Week Parade a spectacular event.

The theme for 2024 was ‘Reading Is Magic’ and many of our staff and students enjoyed dressing up as magical and mythical characters.

The Gym was the perfect venue for everyone to gather and join our parade to showcase the vibrant colours and costumes to make the day a huge success.

Well done to all students and families who participated in the celebrations.

Poetry in Action

Our Year 7 cohort participated in our inaugural Poetry in Action Day as part of our Book Week celebrations in Week 5.

The day began with a performance from the Poetry in Action team which delved into the different types of language students can use to create powerful poetry.

The day continued with a range of activities, including writing haikus by our Japanese garden, immersing ourselves in our sensory room and creating book spine poetry in the Resource Centre.

Our students had a great time getting creative and finding new ways to express themselves.

A Cosy Night In

Our Junior School students also got in on the Book Week action by getting cosy in our Resource Centre with our Magical Evening.

We had pyjamas, special guest readers, a guest magician and hot chocolate for a toasty and magical night in!

Kindy Visit

Ms Fletcher’s Year 12 Child Studies students invited a local childcare centre to share an extra special lunch and learn all about healthy eating!

The childcare children worked closely with their Year 12 buddies to make yummy salad wraps and tasty strawberry and banana smoothies that they all ate together at a very fancy table.

There were full tummies and smiling faces all round!

Beyond Bouldering

On Friday of Week 5 Mr Heywood’s Year 11 Outdoor Education class commenced their unit on bouldering and rock climbing, venturing to Beyond Bouldering at Keswick.

Bouldering is an exciting form of rock climbing that focuses on short, powerful climbs without the use of ropes or harnesses. It’s a thrilling way to challenge your strength, agility, and problem-solving skills in a dynamic, social setting. Students had to work together to plan the best route to conquer some challenging climbs.

SSO Week

Week 5 was also SSO Week where we got to celebrate our amazing School Services Officers (SSOs)!

Often working behind the scenes our SSO’s work hard to keep our school and community running and with roles ranging from admin, finance, student services and first aid to wellbeing, library services, IT, maintenance and student and classroom support, every single one of our team plays a vital role in supporting our students and community.

On behalf of the entire HCS community, we say thank you to our outstanding SSOs!!

Eden Prize Winners

Congratulations to Year 9 student Rylee Williams who won second prize in the 2024 Eden School Prize!

The Eden School Prize is an essay competition open to Year 8, 9 and 10 students in South Australian government schools who want the opportunity to share their ideas about the world they live in. It is funded by the 1956 John Joseph Eden bequest and embraces the notion of making the world a better and happier place. This year students wrote essays on the subject: How does music make the world a better place?

Rylee’s essay was judged by Department for Education Humanities and Information Technology officers and awarded 2nd place. Rylee will receive $750 for her efforts.

Congratulations Rylee! and congratulations to all students who entered their essays!

Science Week 2024

Week 6 saw us celebrating Science Week at HCS and the theme this year was Species Survival – More than just sustainability.

The theme aims to highlight the importance of science and innovation in ensuring the survival and thriving of different species in an ever-changing world.

In the spirit of sustainability, our Year 4 students took a trip over to our High School Marine Room to learn all about conservation.

They learnt about the importance of protecting our Great Barrier Reef and even got to have a look at some of the fish and corals native to the reef in our tanks, oh, and Shazza our resident Port Jackson Shark of course!

Animals Anonymous, a mobile team of wildlife demonstrators and environmental educators, also paid us a visit and brought with them a host of native Australian animals that rea typically in need of a little extra help.

Students got to learn about fat-tailed dunnarts, northern leaf-tailed geckos, Boyd’s forest dragons and eastern hooded scaly-foots, which ironically do not actually have any feet! We also had a rather sassy galah, a blue tongue, bearded dragon, and even a croc!

Students loved getting hands on and learning how we can make small differences to help our environment.

Zahra Foundation Fundraiser

Also in Week 6 we Stepped up to Safety for the Zahra Foundation.

The fundraiser was championed by one of our Student Presidents, Elysia, who wanted to make a difference and support the Zahra Foundation who provide free programs, services, education and grants promoting economic well-being and empowering participants to build a life that is free from poverty and abuse.

Elysia set the goal of running 350 flights of steps between us and we absolutely smashed it by doubling the target! The tunes were blasting and the blood was pumping, we raised awareness for the cause and nearly $2 50 to be sent to the Zahra Foundation.

Well done Elysia for standing up and thank you to all who made the event possible. Watch highlights of the day here.

Jump Rope for Heart

In Week 6 our Junior School absolutely smashed their Jump Rope for Heart Challenge.

Jump Rope for Heart is a Heart Foundation initiative that aims to get kids moving while raising money to help others! Students have been practising and raising money all term for their final performance last week where they got to show off the skills they have learnt and celebrate how much money they raised.

At last count, our little super heroes had raised over $4500 for the Heart Foundation! A huge thank you to our community members who have supported our students in their efforts and the teachers who helped develop their skills!

Indigenous Murals

At the start of Week 7 while everyone was at the show, we got a show of our own!

The amazingly talented Scott Rathman aka Rusted Tin was back doing incredible work for our Junior School and Middle School areas.

It was amazing to see him work so quickly and freely and produce something so incredible

The pieces were commissioned as part of our Reconciliation Week celebrations and while Scott was the artist, many of the elements came from our ATSI and SRC students and represent what Hallett Cove School means to them. Don’t forget to check them out next time you’re here!

Maths Quiz

Last week three teams of Year 12 students competed against one another during a lunchtime Maths and General Knowledge Quiz.

They all walked away winners having had fun, laughs and engaging in some friendly competition – and don’t forget the lure of the prizes!

There will be a lunchtime quiz organised for the Middle School students in the coming weeks!

Hallett Cove Radio

Studio One last week was all about the music with special guests, Junior School band Spirit Battery and selcte members form our High School band Retillix.

Spirit Battery are super talented and played a couple of songs live while Retillix happy to share their wisdom after a few years of performing together now.

STEM Aboriginal Learners Congress 2024

A group of our Aboriginal adn Torres Strait Islander students had the recent opportunity to attend the STEM Aboriginal Learners Congress 2024. Students attended over two days and had some amazing experiences.

On day one they listened to key note speches from SA Attorney Genral, Kyam Maher and SA Education Minister, Blair Boyer and finished the day off exploring Adelaide Zoo.

On day two the students learnt all about how to make bush medicine and made natural lemongrass lip balm to take home. They also got to experiement with Chemicals Alive and, mixing and playing with baking soda, vinegar and plenty of other chemicals, recording reactions and observations and discussing the many directions a career in science can take you.

They finished their jam packed days with an amazing performance by indigenous hip hop group, Dem Mob.

International

The recent Whale Watching Camp for our International students was an enriching and memorable experience for all participants. The camp was designed to offer students a blend of educational and recreational activities, learning about environmental conservation (focusing on whale watching) and cultural appreciation.

Highlights included learning about coastal marine ecosystems from local marine biologists, as well as a 3-hour boat trip along the Coorong to see long nosed fur seals and dolphins, indigenous midden sites and bush tucker trails culminating in a smoking ceremony and visit to the infamous 90-Mile Beach where there were spectacular ocean views.

Another highlight was The Big Duck Sea cruise to look for Southern Right and Humpback whales that migrate to South Australia from Antarctic waters. The final day included a visit to Myponga Reservoir, where Park Rangers led a tour highlighting the area’s natural beauty and wildlife. Students were thrilled to see so many kangaroos in their natural habitat, providing a fitting end to an adventurous and educational camp. Thank you to all who helped make this a successful camp.

Sport

Year 9/10 Futsal

In Week 3, Hallett Cove School sent an enthusiastic squad to participate in Round #1 of the Year 9/10 Statewide Knock Out Futsal (5-a-side Indoor Soccer) Competition held at Seaford Recreation Centre.

Despite a slow and shaky first game and one loss to Cardijn, the boys were fantastic – in their behaviour, their brand of futsal and motivation to perform their best.

Everyone played their role superbly, especially our reserve Goalkeeper (J Byrne) who got a last-minute call up to the starting 5 due to illness of our no. 1 GK (E Pridham).

Through their hard work, their ‘TEAM’ focus and determination, they earned their spot in the FINALS finishing second overall to a very strong and polished Cardijn.

RESULTS:

Vs. Woodcroft – 5:1 – win
Vs. Aberfoyle – 13:0 – win
Vs. Cardijn – 4:2 – loss
Vs. Reynella East College – 5:1 – win
Vs. Seaford – 7:5 – win
Vs. Willunga – 5:0 – win

Well done to all that participated in this great day!

On Monday of Week 6, we sent the same squad to participate in the finals of the Year 9/10 Statewide Knock Out Futsal Competition held at St Clair Recreation Centre.

Facing some strong competition in this finals campaign, the boys were put to the test against the other seven best schools in the state. To their credit and capabilities, the squad put in a good showing, displaying a good brand of futsal and a competitive spirit. Unfortunately, the boys were missing the ruthless instinct in front of goal that is required at this level of competition to place higher overall.

RESULTS:

Vs. Parafield Gardens – 6:2 – loss (slow start & missed opportunities)
Vs. St Pauls – 4:3 – win
Vs. Unley – 5:1 – loss (who were runner’s up in the overall competition & missed opportunities)

We finished 3rd in our Pool and played against Adelaide High School for 5th / 6th – beating them 7:3.

Well done to all that participated in this great day! Finishing as the 5th best school/team in state is no mean feat considering the quality and calibre of the opposition. We are looking forward to competing in next year’s competition.

Volleyball Schools Cup

In Week 4 we had over 120 students and 20 staff and previous HCS students participate in the South Australian Schools Volleyball Cup.

The South Australian Schools Volleyball Cup is 32 schools participating in 22 divisions over three days and two nights. With many tight matches, our students stood up to the pressure and all teams not only represented the school well, but improved a lot over the three days.

The results are in and WOW!

Year 7 Boys 1 – 1st place GOLD
Year 7 Boys 2 – 6th place
Year 7 Girls – 1st place GOLD

Year 9 Girls – 8th place
Year 10 Boys – 7th place

A huge thank you to the staff and ex-students who put in many hours to ensure that our students received great coaching. Their expertise, passion and enthusiasm went a long way towards us achieving these amazing results.

Well done students! Your passion and enthusiasm was clearly evident in your games and plays and your team spirit was impeccable. Keep up the amazing work teams!

Fruit, Veg and Bread

Hallett Cove School will be continuing with Fruit, Veg and Bread next year. We are fortunate to receive donations of fruit, vegetables and bread from local businesses and charities.

Each even week of term, we will have fruit and vegetables available on Monday afternoons, and every Thursday we have bread available outside the Early Years for families to collect.

Phone Policy and Yondr Pouches

Thank you to all of our students and families for their support with implementing the South Australian Government ban on mobile phones in schools in 2023.

The use of Yondr pouches at Hallett Cove School made an immediate impact on phone use and students are happily engaging in learning, during class and at break times.

Your ongoing support with encouraging your child to follow our phone policy is appreciated.

Hallett Cove School aims to take advantage of the reach and instantaneous nature of social media to communicate with our families.

Social Media

We have long had a regularly updated Facebook page and last year we added Instagram to our media presence. Links to all our pages are included at the bottom of this page.

Along with our main page, we have also created two additional Facebook pages for particular audience members of our community:

  • Hallett Cove Career Pathways: To keep parents and students informed of career information and opportunities through Hallett Cove School.
  • Hallett Cove School Community Announcements: To keep parents, students and the wider community informed about education sessions and educational opportunities, to raise public awareness around the current trends in society and provide information about upcoming events and opportunities.
Parents and Friends

Hallett Cove School values the contribution of our community and we encourage any of our parents and friend to consider joining the Parents and Friends Group (P&F) in 2024.

The P&F support key functions in the school. Recently, our P&F have held a Sports Day stall, Harmony Day stall, Quiz Night and parents are assisting in managing our Street Libraries (outside the Vegetable Garden and Early Years Centre) and organising our Quiz Night.

Please email info@hcs.sa.edu.au if you are interested in joining P&F and the school will put you in contact with our P&F representative and our Volunteer Coordinator.

Kiss and Drop Areas

When dropping off/picking up your child(ren), please remember that the middle lane (Gledsdale Road Kiss and Drop) and right lane (Sanderson Road Kiss and Drop) should not be used as a waiting/parking lane.

Local councils are often out and about at schools ensuring the community use these spaces safely.
